The Jeanne d'Arc helicopter carrier, formerly known as the Resolution, named after the French heroine Joan of Arc. Construction began on July 7, 1960, it was launched on September 30, 1961, and it was commissioned on June 30, 1964.
The Jeanne d'Arc was used extensively, usually as a training ship. Little modified during wartime, it could be used as an amphibious assault ship, helicopter carrier, or troop transport ship. When built, this ship could transport a battalion of 700 men and land its supplies.
The ship is 182 meters long and 24 meters wide, with a draft of 7.3 meters. Its powerplant is equipped with two transverse-axis turbines and develops 40,000 horsepower. Its maximum speed is 26.5 km/h, and its top speed is 15 km/h. Its range is approximately 10,000 km/h. Its helicopter platform can accommodate eight helicopters. Its armament includes four 100 mm cannons and six MM38 "Flying Fish" missile launchers. The aircraft carrier Jeanne d'Arc was modernized in 2000 and its aft 100 mm anti-aircraft artillery was removed.
