For the 1977 rally season, the French manufacturer Renault developed a racing version of its popular R5 utility vehicle. Although designed for very different uses, this car allowed French engineers, after meticulous preparation, to extract considerable power from the engine: 150 hp, and remarkable torque which, thanks to its featherweight of only 800 kg, made the R5 a very agile and fast car. The R5 achieved remarkable results at the Sanremo and Monte Carlo rallies in 1978, followed by excellent results at the Acropolis Rally and in Africa.
