Description

At Citroën's management, it is estimated that the standard of living of the French and Europeans will rise, they have just successfully launched the 2CV and they need to find an heir to the 15 and 11 CV. It was the VGD (Voiture a Grande Diffusion) project, the first sketches of which date back to 1945, that took shape. The management was entrusted to Andre LEFEBVRE, who resolutely opted for innovation in all directions. The bodywork will be the domain of Flaminio Bertoni, the suspension that of Paul Magès. For the engine, Pierre Bercot took over the study of the old 1911 cm3 D engine. By the end of 1954, the project was frozen in its entirety. October 1955, the 42nd Paris Motor Show. The first thing that strikes you is its aesthetics, which have never been seen before. It will divide France into two: the 'for' and the 'against'. But the novelty is not limited to the bodywork, the hydropneumatic suspension ensures unrivalled comfort with four independent wheels, the plastic becomes an important element of the body with the roof and rear window as well as the light alloys for the bonnet. This is followed by just as many new details: from the single-spoke steering wheel to the spindle-shaped turn signals and the doors without window pillars. The first convertibles were first designed by BERTONI and marketed by CHAPRON. The factory convertibles were based on the ID 19 and the cars were offered with leather interiors. The cabriolet was sold for the first time at the 1961 Motor Show for the sum of 22,000 F, in comparison, a Dauphine at the same time was sold for 6,000 F.
