Extraordinarily aerodynamic, the Italian Macchi MC.202 Folgore fighter was powered by the powerful German DB 601 inline engine produced under license. The new powerplant allowed the Regia Aéronautica to fight on equal terms with Allied fighters. Compared to previous-generation Italian radial-powered fighters such as the Fiat G-50 and the Macchi MC.200, performance was indeed far superior. Maneuverable and fast (it could reach 600 km/h), the Macchi MC.202 Folgore was armed in early versions with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns installed in the nose. It was only in later versions that the armament was reinforced. Many Italian pilots distinguished themselves on the MC.202, whose four livery options are offered by this kit.
