Description

STEM Ugears Curvimeter

There is no reliable source on the actual inventor of the curvimeter. Some sources say that the credit for his invention goes to the Roman engineer Virtuvius, who describes a very similar device around 23 BC. Others refer to a Chinese scholar, Zhong Heng. Russian sources suggest that the curvimeter was the invention of polymath Mikhail Lomonosov, who presumably called him "krivimetr" initially. Overall, the first official curvimeter patent belongs to the English engineer Edward Russell Morris who, in 1873, registered "a new distance measurement device".

A Curvimeter is used to measure the length of curved lines on topographic maps, graphs, diagrams and planes. It is thus a common tool for cartographers, tourists and road services. The curvimeter mechanism consists of:
Measuring wheel with extra main scales, and a needle.
Planetary mechanism.
Cycling training.
