The USS Yorktown was a World War II U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, the first of its class, which was sunk on June 7, 1942, during the Battle of Midway. The third American warship to bear this name, the USS Yorktown was a 19,800-ton aircraft carrier. Its hull number was CV-5. Built at the Newport News shipyard in Virginia, it was launched on April 4, 1936, and its godmother was Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of the 32nd President of the United States. It was declared operational on September 30, 1937, and Captain Ernest D. McWhorter assumed command. Once armed, the aircraft carrier sailed for the Virginia Capes training area off the Chesapeake Bay in January 1938, where it conducted qualification operations for its new airborne group. From April 1939, it operated in the Caribbean and the Atlantic, then for the next two years in the Pacific. In May 1941, the Yorktown returned to the Atlantic, where it patrolled during the months preceding the United States' entry into the war against the Axis powers. Model kit of over 1120 parts.
