Description

the Renault Management launched in 1962 the Renault 8 which will be, with the R10, the last car with an engine placed at the rear until the appearance of the Twingo III in 2014.

It was not until the Paris Motor Show 1964 that we discovered the Model R8 Gordini (TYPE R1134). She will very quickly be recognizable in her Bleu France 418 dress and her double white band running the entire length of the car.

The first car offering accessible sports performance with a production car budget, its oversteer behavior (it drifts from the rear) due to the engine placed in the rear overhang will make it a reference of sporty driving for experienced drivers but also for all lovers of skidding.

Amédée Gordini, nicknamed "the sorcerer", will transform the original block (Cléon Fonte of 956 cm3) by increasing its displacement to 1108 cm3 (77.5 hp DIN / 95ch SAE). The most significant changes will be the adaptation of a hemispherical cylinder head (V-valves and central spark plugs) and the addition of two solex horizontal double-body carburetors.

With a top speed of 170 Km/h the R8 Gordini is one of the fastest cars of its time.

In September 1966 appears the R8 Gordini 1300 with an engine of 1255 cm3 developing 88 hp DIN /103 hp SAE. The gearbox now has 5 gears and the top speed is increased to 175 km/h.

A month after its presentation, the R8 Gordini will not stop to collect victories for nearly 10 years (Tour de Corse, Rally of Morocco, Australian Rally Championship, Rally of Cote d'Ivoire, Rally of Portugal).

The last R8 Gordini was manufactured in May 1970.

A total of 11607 Renault Gordini were produced, including 8981 for the 1300 version alone.

True icon of a generation the Gorde is now tearing itself apart at prices of great sportswomen full of technology. However, its performance remains intact.
